John Hovious. Son of Elizabeth HOVIOUS. Born in Green Co., KY in February 1820. Married Nancy Eliza MARTIN, on 16 December 1841 [Nancy was born in 1821, the daughter of James and Jemima Butler Martin. She died on 17 January 1906.] Children with Nancy Eliza MARTIN:
According to a 1931 article, John Hovious "was a large landowner in Kentucky. His place was called 'Hovious', where the Post Office was located by that name for many years." His property is listed in Adair County records as having been at White Oak Creek, in the northern part of the county. John was in poor health in his later life. Between 1862 and 1864 he was incapacitated by a protracted case of Typhoid Fever, followed by the growth of a tumor on his right side. In 1873 he suffered a fall which impaired his health to an extent from which he never fully recovered. Nevertheless, he was healthy enough to travel to Kansas and back in the winter and spring of 1887, to visit his son Richard. A letter John wrote in February 1888 to his cousin Silas Burke Hovious still exists today, and has been the source of much first-hand information about our early family.
John Hovious died in late 1888. He is buried in Harden Cemetery in Adair Co, KY in a grave marked only by a small unengraved stone.
From around 1900 till her death, Nancy's son Joseph led her household.
